Yuyuan Garden – Classic Chinese Garden in Shanghai
Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden is a 400 years old garden in Shanghai, China. It was first built during the Ming dynasty by Pan for his parents. It is considered to be the best garden in Shanghai. If you are traveling to Shanghai, Yuyuan garden is definitely a must-visit. It is one of the top things to do in Shanghai. It is also one of the most top Instagram spots in Shanghai. Note that Yuyuan Garden will be closed every Monday excluding public holidays.

Before you can reach the entrance of Yuyuan Garden, you need to pass through Yu Bazaar. You will pass through shops, food stalls, and restaurants before you can access the garden. Make sure to be aware of your surroundings and your things since this area is best known for pickpockets who target tourists.

If you want to try street food in Shanghai, there are a lot of food stalls in Yu Bazaar. I tried this fruit candy, it is famous street food in China. I did not really like it though. I find it too sweet and I did not really like the taste of the fruit. A lot of travelers seemed to like it though.

How to get there?
Option 1: By Bus
Take Bus No. 11, 26, 64, 71, 145, 581, 715, 730 and get off at Yuyuan Garden Stop.
Option 2: Metro
Take the train (line 10) and get off at Yuyuan Garden station
How Much Time to Spend
I would say that spending 2-3 hours would be enough time to explore the garden. You have enough time to appreciate the garden, shop for some souvenirs, try some street food, and many more. We arrived at around 9 A.M and we spent almost the whole morning. We had our lunch at Yu Bazaar around 11 A.M. If you go earlier, there will be fewer crowds as well. You can also choose to go during night time. The gardens and buildings will be lit up during night time.

Yuyuan garden is actually very big and spacious. It feels like a maze once you enter the garden. There are a lot of photo spots as well. If there is only one ticketed attraction you will do in Shanghai, I highly recommend Yuyuan Garden.

My favorite attraction in Yuyuan garden is this Chinese castle. The left photo reminds me of Rapunzel’s tower since it feels like it is in a forest. On the other side, it’s more on oriental or Chinese architecture.
I had fun exploring Yuyuan Garden. It is definitely a must-visit when in Shanghai. It is a perfect attraction for all ages from kids to adults.
