During my first international travel, the biggest mistake I did was not having travel insurance. Prior to booking my flights to Hong Kong, I have watched travel videos and read travel blogs. I discovered that one blogger lost her luggage. She flew from Manila to Hong Kong and checked in her luggage but the luggage never arrived in Hong Kong. It made me anxious and worried that the same thing would happen on our trip since we are also flying with the same airline. I decided that we would not check in our luggage and just bring one carry on bag per person instead. It was a great decision since we also saved money from our flight with no checked-in baggage. I didn’t know about travel insurance at that time. If only I had travel insurance, I would not have to worry about lost luggage

Why Travel Insurance is Important

Why Travel Insurance is Important

I have never heard of travel insurance before my first trip but I was glad that I discovered them. I no longer need to be anxious about losing my luggage anymore. Aside from lost luggage, there are also many other benefits of having travel insurance.

Travel Insurance

One reason why most travelers do not have travel insurance when they travel is because of additional expenses. Hotels, flights, food, and attraction tickets are already expensive that most travelers are not willing to have additional expenses. They might feel that it is not worth it since sometimes, they might not even need it. It’s much better to have one even when you end up not using it than not having one when you need it. I don’t have to worry about having accidents and medical bills since it will also be covered.

SafetyWing: Travel Medical Insurance

I am so glad that I discovered SafetyWing, it is one of the best travel insurance. For only 37 USD for 4 weeks or 1.32 USD per day, it is one of the most affordable travel insurance. If you are traveling in the US, it will be 68 USD for 4 weeks.

They are very flexible too. If you are traveling for a short period of time with fixed dates, you can just specify the duration of your trip. For example, my upcoming trip to Shanghai next week is only 5 days, I can just set the date on the first day of my trip and end it on the last day of the trip. I just have to apply again on my next trip. If you are traveling frequently or a long-term traveler, you can just choose your start date and cancel anytime. You can also set up auto-renewal every month so you don’t have to worry about forgetting to renew if it expires.

Benefits of SafetyWing

1. Medical

Unexpected emergencies and accidents can happen anytime during your travels. Without travel insurance, your vacation will be ruined. You saved up several months before your trip for your dream vacation then suddenly you also need to pay for hospital and medical bills. With SafetyWing, you don’t have to worry if you are in an accident or get sick while traveling and need medical assistance. Your insurance includes hospitals, intensive care, and ambulance.

2. Travel

My greatest nightmare is a delayed flight. I have experienced a delayed flight during my Hong Kong trip. Our flight back to Manila was delayed for a few hours. Aside from the inconvenience, it didn’t really affect us since it is only for a few hours. However, I’ve heard horror stories from friends and other travel bloggers about delayed flights. Some flights are delayed up to 24 hours. I imagined if it will happen to me, I can imagine myself being frustrated since I would have already booked the hotel and miss my first night. All of this can be avoided with SafetyWing.

Travel Delay, trip interruption, and lost luggage are all covered by SafetyWing. Other unexpected situations such as natural disasters, political evacuation, and emergency medical evacuation are also covered by SafetyWing.

The best part about SafetyWing is you can travel to almost all countries with the exception of North Korea, Iran, and Cuba.
